The bearcat, also known as a binturong, is a fascinating and unique mammal native to South and Southeast Asia. This creature belongs to the family Viverridae, which includes civets and genets. With a body length of about 60-96 centimeters (2-3 feet) and a tail almost as long, bearcat adults can weigh between 9 and 20 kilograms (20-44 pounds). They have a stocky, robust build, with thick, black fur and a bushy tail.
One of the most distinctive features of the bearcat is its prehensile tail, a rare trait among carnivores. This tail acts like a fifth limb, helping the animal to balance and climb in the forest canopy. Bearcats are excellent climbers and spend a significant amount of time in trees. Their feet are also quite remarkable, with semi-retractable claws and a rotating ankle joint on the hind legs, which allows them to descend trees head-first.
